Best Kids Tablet to Buy in 2013
When looking for the best kids tablet to buy you need to think about durability and content. I have broken down all the best tablets for kids based on age range and suitable price for that age range. As your kids grow their needs change as far as what they will be doing with a tablet and what kind of content needs they have.
Best Toddler Tablet 18 Months to 9 Years
If you haven’t seen the Vinci III M tablet and you have a very young child this is the tablet to check out this year. There is a full curriculum starting at 18 months leading all the way through Kindergarten. It has WiFi and is a full Android tablet. It is very durable and will give your child access to many hours of entertaining educational content. It also has parental controls so don’t worry your kids will have access to everything on the tablet. You can see a full review and get my insights into all the pros and cons of this new tablet. They start around 169.99 and are well worth the money. Your child will definitely be getting that 30$ a year worth of use.
Best Kids Tablets Aged 3-5 and under 100$
Based on current products I have come up with 3 kids tablets that are suitable for the age range of 3-5. These kids tablets are based on educational value and durability of the products as most young children are not very careful with their toys. With young children you want something they will learn from and something that will keep them entertained on car rides and appointments that busy parents have.
Recently released since I have written this article is the LeapPad Ultra and Innotab 3s. See a comparison review of how these new tablets for ages 3 to 5 are doing.
LeapFrog LeapPad2 ExplorerSee New LeapPad Ultra
First is the LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer. It starts at 79.99 and won Toy of the Year for 2012. It is very durable with a hard shelled case that comes in either green or pink. The publishers that make game cartridges for this kids tablet include Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and more. It does not have WiFi but you can easily download programs to your computer and transfer them via a USB cable. It also has a directional pad, motion sensor, and touch screen to allow children to interact with games and educational books. The apps and game cartridges will run between $3-25 depending on type of app, book etc. It is powered by 4 AA batteries and runs through them very quickly so pick up the rechargeable battery pack.
Vtech Innotab 2sSee New Innotab 3s
The Vtech Innotab 2s is very similar to the LeapPad 2 in that it also has very good educational programs and publishers. The main difference is that the Vtech Innotab 2s has WiFi and programs can be downloaded via the Internet by simply connecting to a hot spot and connecting to the Learning Lodge. Most content will run the same price as the LeapPad 2 at about 3- 25$. The things that I like better about the Vtech Innotab 2s are the swivel camera, video playback, importing your own MP3′s and photos, and the ability to add an SD storage card to increase total memory.
Nabi JrSee Nabi Jr Nick Jr Edition
The Nabi Jr is the only one of the three that is an actual Android Tablet. It has mommy/daddy mode that allows you to lock features since it does have WiFi and a kid safe web browser. Their is a learning program called Wings that lets you track your child’s progress through the educational apps. It has a nice soft shelled red bumper case and has the best screen quality and resolution. It runs 99.99 which is 20 $ more than the the LeapFrog LeapPad 2 and the Vtech Innotaab 2s but you won’t be buying batteries or an expensive battery pack to go with this product. There are also a ton of purchasable apps through Amazon and Android Market.
Breakdown of the Best Kids Tablets for Ages 3-5
The Nabi Jr is the only product that is an actual kids tablet and not a toy. It has access to the web and many downloadable apps that are cheaper then cartridges. The educational value for young children is best on either the LeapFrog LeapPad 2 and Vtech Innotab 2s. Your money is not going to go as far in terms of years but in 3 years you will probably be ready to buy them something a little nicer anyways. Don’t pick the Vtech Innotab 2s just because it has WiFi because a lot of parents have had issues getting it to connect. If you want to see full reviews on each of theses tablets visit Kid Tablets with WiFi and check kids tablets for ages 3-5.
Best Kids Tablets for Ages 5-12
The best kids tablet in the age range 5-12 should be one that is moderately durable and one that should grow with your child. At this point your only concern is not just education but entertaining your child. They are beginning to decide when and how they want to spend their time but you can still influence them with parental controls available on most of these tablets. The kids tablet you buy for your 5 year old son or daughter could and should potentially be the last tablet you buy for years to come.
Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HDSee New Kindle Fire Line
The Kindle Fire(159$) and Kindle Fire HD(199$) are both under 200$ and offer great value. They both have a multitude of options for kids apps and parental controls through Kindle FreeTime Unlimited. It costs 2.99 a month and has unlimited amounts of games, books, movies, and TV shows. There are many popular publishers like Disney, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros, Sesame Street, and more. Better to spend the cost of a book to get thousands of books, movies and games to your Kindle Fire at any time. The major differences with the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD are the best WiFi available on a tablet, a camera, a mini HDMI port for television hook up, better battery, and double the memory for the 199$ price tag.
Nabi 2See Nabi 2 Nickelodeon Edition
The Nabi 2 is probably the most durable kids tablet available to date. You can watch this YouTube video to see how durable the Nabi 2 is. Android based tablet with 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and many parental controls as well. It has a kid safe web browser and app manager called AppZone 2.0 that includes create, entertain, learn, play, and read. The Nabi 2 also has the mommy/daddy mode that lets you check in on your child’s progress in the the children’s apps. Not only the most durable kids tablet but the most responsive and best hardware for under 200$.
Apple iPad Mini
The iPad Mini is a 7″ screen masterpiece as far as kids tablets goes. There is a ton of content available on iTunes but it will cost you. The iPad Mini is backed by an amazing customer service company, Apple. This is the only tablet in this category that has 2 cameras that are both HD quality. The price tag is around 329$ but worth every penny. It does not have a ton of parental controls and could easily slide into the over 12 range with this pricey tag. It is a very easy to use kids tablet but also not the most durable of tablets. Definitely a great case is a must have for anyone purchasing Apple iPad Mini. If you have a lot of content invested in iTunes it might be best to stay with an Apple product.
Breakdown of the Best Kids Tablets for Ages 5-12
All three of these kids tablets are top quality and the producers make little to nothing because of the quality of components inside. It would be a hard choice to decide what to buy if you plan on spending around 200$. Both Android tablets can be rooted to full usable Android tablets but it will void your warranty. If durability is your first priority when purchasing a kids tablet then go with the Nabi 2, although the Kindle Fire is very durable I’ve never seen a test like that passed by another tablet. If quality content and hours of it is your priority then get a Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD. The iPad Mini is almost double the cost so if you have 2 kids then buy them each a Kindle Fire or Nabi 2 as opposed to spending the extra money. The iPad Mini is a very beautiful fast functioning product but it is made by Apple and they will charge you to have one of your very own.
Best Kids Tablets for Ages 12 and Up
This is definitely going to be the most expensive class of kids tablets but this one should last them until college or until they are ready to spend their own hard earned money. It should be very functional and allow your children to make decisions on how to use it whether it be games, social media, multimedia, research for school, or creating presentations. You will want a powerful device with great hardware that will last.
Samsung Galaxy 3 Tab

The iPad 4 is the highest rated product out there with almost a perfect 5 out of 5 stars anywhere you check but will cost you around 500$ for the bottom of the barrel version. Apple has not only met consumers expectations but exceeded and set the example for best customer service by a company. Their quality and unique components put them in a different class all together. The real question is do you want to pay double the price tag on a more fragile product that has an exclusive market or purchase something that is a close second for half the price. The iPad 4 has exceptional HD qualities and seamless app launching with very few crashes or viral threats which makes it unique in the tablet market. It is definitely a premier product but are Android products knocking at the door everyday? It has 5MP cameras available to take full HD videos and pics and has a number of providers who support this product (Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon). It will run you an additional 150$ to get service so your looking at about 750$ plus just to get started. The iPad 4 is uniquely exquisite and priced to match.See iPad with Retina Display
Google Nexus 10
The Google Nexus 10 has partnered with Samsung to develop the highest resolution tablet on the Android Market. It not only gives the best resolution but surprisingly has a processor that can handle outputting this much data to the screen almost as fast as the iPad 4. It is a product still very new and in its developing stage that will run you about 399$. It contains 2 HD cameras that run 1.9 MP front and 5.0 MP rear and can take panoramic spherical pictures. Google play store has adapted most Android apps and it will run them with ease and fluidly. Breakdown for the Best Kids Tablets for Ages 12 and Up
There are many things to consider when purchasing a tablet that is this pricey and although Apple iPads were the most popular in recent years check out how many people are choosing Android over Apple these days to save some money.
The market is shifting and unless your willing to pay the hefty price tag of the Apple iPad 4 there are many reasonable selections among Android tablets. If you want the full Android experience then choose the Nexus 10 or Samsung Galaxy.
