What is the LeapFrog LeapPad 2 Explorer Kids Tablet

The LeapForg LeapPad 2 is the number Winner of Educational Toy of the Year and Peoples Choice Award for best toy. It is built like a tablet to give kids the feel of their very own tablet and has the educational value of a Kindergarten teacher. The many characters of related publishers take your children through learning about safety, numbers, letters, math, science, creativity and more. It also has options that show the parents how far their child is progressing and learning with this tablet”s programs and apps. You can buy game cartridges or download software from the internet to give your child much more usability. It is also very durable but I wouldn’t recommend taking a hammer to it to find out how much.

LeapFrog LeapPad 2 Explorer  Kids Tablet Specs

The LeapFrog LeapPad 2 comes with 4 GB on-board memory and a faster processor than it’s predecessors. It has a beautiful 5″ touch screen with great resolution. Includes both a front and rear facing camera for videos and pictures. Requires 4 AA batteries or the rechargeable battery pack to power it. It Has 512 MB of RAM.  And last but not least it does not have WiFi and requires a high speed internet connection so you can use the USB port to connect to a computer and downoad apps to it.

  • The best educational tablet for kids hands down

The Bad

  •  It is powered by 4 AA batteries or an expensive battery pack 40$
  • There is no expandable memory slot so you will have to manage content when it is full
  • Game cartridges cost 24.99 a piece
  • No MP3 player included so you pay for all additional songs
  • Advertisements included for children to watch(borderline inappropriate)
  • No included eBooks???
  • No WiFi

The Breakdown

This is the best tablet for kids in this age range if money were no issue at all and if it is not then get it. I have a problem with them advertising to kids so they can come to me and say can I get this all the time. 1.99-3.99 for a book is no issue but when it starts digging into your pockets at 24.99$ and you hate to say no when you know they will learn something from it. I like that it is focused on learning and has a better starter pack then the Vtech Innotab 2s but at what price are you willing to pay. Might be time to think about an android tablet where apps are reasonably priced. It is a great toy and will provide much more entertainment and learning then almost anything you can purchase at a $rate/hour. If a movie cost you 8$ for 2 hours of entertainment it would be much better to get an educational game for 24.99$ that gives your child more than 6 hours of play time.

  1. A few tablets that’s made for kids have removable parts. Especially the battery component. I believe any tablets that is geared toward kids age 3 and up should have an internal battery pack instead. I understand this will (or not?) cost the manufacture more but it’ll help keep our kids safer.

    • I agree but at least the new LeapPad Ultra has the internal battery. The explorer model does not and it runs through quite a few batteries. They do sell a rechargeable battery pack for this model though.

  2. My daughter got the Leap Pad 2 for her Birthday this year. It keeps her entertained for hours. But I definitely recommend investing in some rechargeable batteries!. Cheers

    • Another option for people is the LeapPad 2 Power which comes with the rechargeable pack. I f you prefer the explorer then you are 100% right. Batteries can get so expensive.

      Thanks for the comment Josh
